When’s the Best Time for Crappie Fishing?

In spring when crappie are spawning in the shallows, it's probably the most popular time to reel in crappie at the Lake of the Ozarks. And our fishing resort at the Lake of the Ozarks is the perfect place to catch crappie because we have well maintained crappie beds right below our docks that we keep as stocked as possible.

During the spring spawn, crappies are found in relatively shallow water near the upper ends of coves. Later they move to deeper water, usually to depths of 15 feet or more. Spawning crappie can be caught with jigs, minnows or small crankbaits or spinners. Fish brushpiles and standing timber are where crappie concentrate. During spring, you might find crappie grouped off the bank around brushy structures and suspended at about the same depth as other spawning fish.

Early Morning
Crappie fishing is typically very good in the early morning daylight. Focus your fishing efforts on dawn until about 2 hours after sunrise. During the early morning, crappie can be found in water 4-12 feet deep usually mid-way up in the water column. As the morning creeps along, you will start noticing the crappie moving further from shore and into deeper water. By 10 am, crappie are usually going to be too far from shore to fish without a boat unless you can find some prominent cover with both depth and a readily available food source.

Late Afternoon
Crappie fishing is also very good in the late afternoon/evening time frame right up until dusk. Focus your fishing efforts on fishing from about 2 hours before sunset until just after sunset. Crappie will start moving closer to the shoreline again. Near sunset, sometimes you can find crappie in 10-15 feet of water or even shallower. As insect activity above the surface picks up, this can really stir up fish feeding activity beneath.

The Best Fishing Resort at the Lake of the Ozarks!
Point View Resort is the best place to go on a fishing trip. We’re nestled in the Little Niangua Arm, north of the main channel, where the waters are calm and the fishing is great. Being away from the main channel makes for a quiet spot on the lake and better fishing! The indoor, heated fishing dock (with fully maintained crappie beds) makes every day the perfect day to fish the lake! So if it's raining or a cold spring morning, our indoor dock enables you to fish no matter the weather outside!
